A 26-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Richmond Hill.

York police were called to the area of Major Mackenzie Drive East and Cedar Avenue, just east of Yonge Street, around 9:15 p.m. Thursday.

When they arrived they found a woman on the roadway in life-threatening condition. She was taken to a nearby trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the driver of the vehicle that struck her immediately fled the scene.

They believe the suspect vehicle to be a 2009 to 2011 black Honda Civic with a loud exhaust. It was travelling eastbound on Major Mackenzie at the time of the collision and police say the car only had its running lights on at the time of the crash.

Police say the car will have front windshield damage as a result of the collision.

Anyone with dash cam footage or information is asked to contact police.

Major Mackenzie was closed in the area for the investigation. The roads have since reopened.
