Private funeral to be held Thursday for York region officer killed in collision

York regional police have released the funeral details of 38-year-old Const. Travis Gillespie, who was killed in a two-vehicle collision last week.

The funeral service will take place on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel Ridge Funeral Home and Cremation Centre in Markham.

York police say the visitation will be private and closed to the public and media.

Spokesperson Maniva Armstrong says a procession will not be held, but there will be a recession after the service “as those closest to Const. Gillespie leave for a private interment.”

book of condolences for Const. Gillespie was available to be signed by members of the public at its five police districts in Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Sutton, Vaughan, Markham, and police headquarters in Aurora.

A 23-year-old Markham man faces impaired driving charges in the head-on crash that killed Const. Gillespie last week.

Police say the 38-year-old constable died at the scene while the driver of the Porsche was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Haoju Zhou of Markham has been charged with impaired operation causing death and dangerous operation causing death.

Const. Gillespie is the second GTA officer to die in recent weeks after Const. Andrew Hong was shot and killed in a targeted incident in Mississauga.

The funeral for Const. Hong took place at the Toronto Congress Centre near Pearson Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
