Peel regional police say isolated fights broke out at a Diwali celebration in Mississauga on Monday night.
Police originally tweeted that they were responding to reports of a fight involving 400 to 500 people in a parking lot at Goreway and Etude drives. That alarming tweet was downplayed on Tuesday.
Peel police Const. Mandeep Khatra clarified that while the crowd may have swelled to several hundred people, the fighting was isolated.
“There was information that there were smaller groups involved in fights, but not the whole group,” Khatra told CityNews.
Officers were called to the area at around 9:41 p.m. and say a male was treated on scene by paramedics for minor injuries. It’s not clear how he was injured.
No arrests were made.
“We originally received information that a fight had occurred … police attended, there was a large crowd, a lot of people yelling and screaming,” Khatra said. “It was determined to be a Diwali celebration and police remained in the area to keep the peace and were present in the area until the crowd dispersed.”
