Health Canada says a Tim Hortons chicken noodle soup brand is facing a recall due to what health and safety inspectors deemed the presence of insects.

A Tim Hortons spokesperson tells CityNews that the soup base chicken noodle product was sold in Ontario and Alberta restaurants up to and including Oct. 20, 2022.

“The impacted batches of Chicken Noodle Soup were removed from restaurants and destroyed at that time, and new product from another supplier was delivered to all affected restaurants,” the spokesperson said.

“Chicken Noodle Soup which has been sold at Tim Hortons restaurants elsewhere in the country, is produced by a different manufacturer and was not impacted.”

Health Canada says the chicken noodle product, distributed by La Cie McCormick Canada, was mainly served in hotels and restaurants. It’s unclear what type of insect was discovered.

No illnesses were reported or confirmed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

“While we believe relatively few guests were impacted by this food quality issue, we regret that they had an experience with us that didn’t live up to their expectations or ours.”

The spokesperson noted that canned Tim Hortons soup, first introduced to the market in 2019 and sold at grocery stores, is manufactured separately by another supplier and was not impacted by the product quality issue.

“We will always do the right thing when it comes to upholding the high standards for the food and beverages we serve and have uncompromising expectations for all our suppliers and manufacturing partners,” a spokesperson said, further acknowledging that Tim Hortons had received reports of a product quality issue in October.

“We took decisive action. Rather than waiting for the full results of our investigation and limiting our response to the small number of impacted restaurants, we asked all the restaurant owners who received Chicken Noodle Soup from the supplier in question to immediately dispose of their product.”

Tim Hortons is investigating the incident with the food supplier, the Canadian restaurant chain confirmed, saying it will only restart production once they’re confident the issue will not happen again.
