Twitter relaunching subscriber service after debacle

By The Associated Press

Twitter is once again attempting to launch its premium service, a month after a previous attempt failed.

The social media company said Saturday it would let users buy subscriptions to Twitter Blue to get a blue checkmark and access special features starting Monday.

Twitter says subscribers will be able to edit tweets, upload video in 1080p, see fewer ads, and have their tweets featured more prominently.

Twitter says the blue checkmark will soon be replaced with a gold one for businesses and a grey one for government and multilateral accounts.

The relaunched service will cost $8 a month for web users and $11 a month for iPhone users. Twitter did not explain the reason for the higher price for Apple users. It may be related to a grievance owner Elon Musk raised last week in a series of tweets in which he accused Apple of threatening to block Twitter from its app store as well as a 30 per cent fee the iPhone maker charges software developers.

Musk later tweeted that after a conversation with Apple boss Tim Cook they had resolved their “misunderstanding.”

The blue checkmark was originally given to companies, celebrities, government entities and journalists verified by the platform. After Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in October, he launched a service granting blue checks to anyone willing to pay $8 a month. But it was inundated by imposter accounts, including those impersonating Musk’s businesses Tesla and SpaceX, so Twitter suspended the service days after its launch.
