Major expansion of Highway 401 in west GTA officially complete

The massive, multi-year project to expand Highway 401 in Mississauga and Milton has officially been completed, according to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

In a news release, the MTO said the project to expand the highway had finally reached its end.

“The multi-lane expansion will help fight gridlock and keep goods and people moving across the Greater Golden Horseshoe” the MTO said.

The newly expanded, 18-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 has been opening in sections since late summer.

Drivers will now find a new, 12-lane express and collector lane system both ways between the Credit River and Winston Churchill Boulevard as well as a wider, 10-lane section between Winston Churchill and Highway 407 in Mississauga.

There is also a wider, 12-lane express and collector lane system between Highway 407 and James Snow Parkway, and an expanded 10-lane section between James Snow and Highway 25 in Milton.

A new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane now runs the entire length of this area as well.

“Highway 401 is the busiest and most congested highway in North America with approximately 180,000 vehicles on average per weekday from Credit River in Mississauga to Regional Road 25 in Milton” said Caroline Mulroney, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation.

“Widening Highway 401 is another step forward in our government’s plan to build Ontario with investments in our transportation system to reduce gridlock, improve economic productivity and get drivers home to their loved ones faster.”

The Ontario government says it has committed approximately $3 billion to repair and expand provincial highways and bridges between April 2022 and March 2023.
