Nylander nets OT winner, Maple Leafs knock off Blues 5-4

By Lucas Casaletto

William Nylander scored the overtime winner, and Calle Jarnkrok added three points as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the St. Louis Blues 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Jarnkrok had a goal and two assists, while Justin Holl, John Tavares, Alex Kerfoot and Nylander also scored for Toronto. It was Nylander’s 21st goal of the season, which leads all Maple Leafs entering Wednesday.

Former Maple Leafs’ defenceman Calle Rosen scored the Blues’ first goal, with Justin Faulk, Jordan Kyrou and Ryan O’Reilly potting finding the back of the net.

Ilya Samsonov stopped 30 of 34 shots for Toronto, while Jordan Binnington turned away 32 of 27 shots.

Defenceman T.J. Brodie was hauled down on a partial breakaway in overtime and was granted a penalty shot but was stopped by Binnington.

It was Toronto’s third-straight win as the buds keep rolling into the new year, seven points behind the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Bruins. The Leafs have amassed an 18-7 record since Nov. 2.

On Thursday, Toronto will travel to Arizona for a road game against the Coyotes.
