One person is dead, and a police officer was seriously injured following a wrong-way crash on Highway 401 in Pickering on Friday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the accident occurred just after 5 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway at Brock Road.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash, and one of the cars was going eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with another vehicle.

A Toronto police spokesperson tells CityNews that one of its officers was on their way to work when they became involved in the multi-vehicle crash.

“He was taken to a trauma centre, and at this time, he has serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” Const. Alex Li said. “The OPP is investigating this incident.”

OPP Const. Kerry Schmidt said a 25-year-old male driver from Whitby was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, and refusing to provide a breath sample that resulted in death and bodily harm. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

A 55-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 28-year-old driver from Ajax sustained serious injuries in the crash.

The westbound lanes of the highway remained closed at Brock Road for most of the day due to the investigation.
