A stretch of Danforth Avenue in Toronto’s east-end remains off limits to drivers for a third day as crews continue to investigate a gas leak.

Danforth was closed between Jones and Donlands avenues before 7 p.m. on Monday after reports of a leak near Dewhurst Boulevard. TTC vehicles have been on diversion in the area.

Police initially said Tuesday that the road was expected to be closed for the rest of the day but that closure continued into Wednesday, as Enbridge Gas worked to locate the source of the leak and get it capped.

In an update on Wednesday afternoon, the utility company said the leak occurred at a property located just west of the Donlands subway station.

“Gas flows through the line has since been interrupted, which has stopped the leak,” an Enbridge spokesperson told CityNews.

“This customer was not currently consuming natural gas, but the service was active in anticipation of future use. Our crews are in the process of backfilling several areas where excavation was undertaken to locate the leak.”

Once the work has been completed, Enbridge said they anticipate to reopen that stretch of Danforth later this afternoon.

The cause of the leak is not yet known.

No injuries have been reported.
