A photo of former Toronto mayor John Tory was covered with paper at Toronto Pearson International Airport days after the politician officially resigned from his post stemming from an affair with a female employee.

Under the section “The Mayors of Toronto Pearson’s community welcomes you,” Tory’s headshot is covered with brown paper. Beside him are Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie and Brampton mayor Patrick Brown.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which operates Pearson, said officials became aware of the photo through Reddit and confirmed that a GTAA employee was not involved.

“The paper covering has been removed, but of course, the signage will eventually be revised and re-installed to account for the change in leadership,” said GTAA spokesperson Ryan White.

Tory shocked the city of Toronto by announcing his resignation after admitting he had an “inappropriate relationship” with a former staffer. Tory handed over his mayoral powers to Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie.

There are no established rules or laws against romantic workplace relationships in Canada between consenting adults.

The Toronto Star was the first media outlet to report on Tory’s relationship with the woman. The employee was not identified, but the Star noted she’s a 31-year-old former advisor in the mayor’s office.

Despite announcing his resignation last Friday, Tory’s departure was dragged out for a week as he stayed on to see his budget approved by city council.

Some of his allies at city hall, as well as Ontario Premier Doug Ford, wanted him to reverse course and see through his term, and polling showed roughly half of residents wanted him to remain mayor.

Ford also commented on Toronto potentially having another mayor and what that would mean for the city and province. Speaking at the news conference in Brampton last week, a reporter asked Ford if he was concerned if a more left-leaning mayor could get into office.

“If a lefty mayor gets in there, God help the people of Toronto,” Ford said.

Tory’s undoing comes months after he handily won a third-term election bid, promising steady leadership in uncertain times.
