MUST-WATCH: Ghostface takes Manhattan

By James Mackin

Ghostface is taking a trip! The latest Scream film has entered the MUST-WATCH Top 10, but will it slaughter its way to the top? Perhaps it’ll go to the return of Mel Brooks, or maybe Idris Elba returning to one of his most famous roles? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

History of the World, Part II

Where to watch: Disney+

Let’s start off with the return of a comedic legend!

42 years after the release of History of the World, Part I, Part II is here! Instead of being a film though, this new addition is an 8 episode miniseries. Like Mel Brooks’ (from the Producers, Young Frankenstein, and Spaceballs) first film, this is a comedic take on several of the biggest stories of history. This new series covers much more ground than the original, including the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the meeting of Marco Polo and Kublai Khan, Shirley Chisholm’s presidential run, and of course Hitler on Ice. Alongside the 96 year old filmmaker, this show also stars Nick Kroll (from Kroll Show and Big Mouth), Wanda Sykes (from the Good Fight and the Upshaws), and Ike Barinholtz (from the Oath and Neighbours).

Luther: The Fallen Sun

Next up, the return of one of Britain’s most infamous detectives!

Luther: The Fallen Sun

Idris Elba as DCI John Luther in Luther: The Fallen Sun, courtesy of Netflix.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is a movie sequel to the popular BBC show Luther, starring Idris Elba (from Pacific Rim and the Suicide Squad). He plays DCI John Luther, a London detective who finds himself constantly struggling with the intense crimes he must solve. He often straddles the line between being righteous and good, never quite sure exactly what the difference is. Following the conclusion of the fifth series, this film sees DCI Luther imprisoned for numerous illegal acts he did during his time as a cop. He’s contacted by one of his unsolved cases, a particularly evil serial killer (played by Andy Serkis from the Lord of the Rings and Andor) who tells him he will kill again. Determined to prevent another murder, Luther breaks out of prison and goes against his fellow cops to bring this man to justice, or violent retribution. This film also stars Cynthia Erivo (from Harriet), Dermot Crowley (from the Death of Stalin), and Hattie Morahan (from the Bank Job).

Now, let’s take a look at a docudrama about one of Canada’s most infamous legal battles!

Disobey is a French language drama starring Éléonore Loiselle (from Falcon Lake) as Chantale Daigle. She was a woman who back in 1989 got pregnant around the time she broke up with her boyfriend, and she decided to have an abortion. However, her now ex sues her in civil court as he wants to keep the baby, arguing fetal rights. By this point, abortion had been decriminalized in Canada making it a relative easy procedure to get. Daigle goes to court, with the nation paying incredible attention to her case, as it could affect the future of woman’s rights across the entire nation.

Scream VI

Lastly, Ghostface takes Manhattan!

In this latest installment to the Scream franchise, it’s a direct follow-up to the fifth film which starred Melissa Barrera (from In the Heights) and Jenna Ortega (from Wednesday) as Sam and Tara Carpenter, respectively. After surviving the recent bout of Ghostface killings in Woodsboro, the two have moved to New York City together hoping to avoid another attack. But Ghostface pops up throughout the city looking for the Carpenter sisters, with bloody murder on its mind. Even though Neve Campbell (from the Craft) famously didn’t come back for this addition, the two sisters will have to team up with Gale Weathers (played by Courtney Cox) to survive. They’ll also have some help from another returning victim, Kirby Reed (played by Hayden Panettiere from Heroes) from Scream 4. This film also stars Samara Weaving (from Ready or Not), Jasmin Savoy Brown (from Yellowjackets), and Dermot Mulroney (from My Best Friend’s Wedding).
