Police in York Region tracked down a stolen vehicle and arrested three suspects last week thanks to some help from above.
Officers on patrol in the Nobleton area of King Township noticed an idling vehicle with no license plate around 3 a.m. on April 8. When police approached the vehicle the driver sped away southbound on Highway 27.
Investigators say officers from the Air Support Unit in the Air2 chopper responded quickly and were able to track the suspect vehicle from above.
The chopper assistance allowed officers on the ground to get into position and put down a tire deflation device, which disabled the passing suspect vehicle.
Video footage from Air2 shows three suspects exit the vehicle near Highway 27 and Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan, running from the roadway in different directions.
“If we could get units to start setting up perimeters, to try and pick anybody off for an arrest,” an air support officer can be heard saying.
Officers can be seen chasing the two of the suspects behind a gas station and apprehending one of them with help from the canine unit. Air2 was able to track a third suspect hiding in some trees.
“I think we may have him,” says the Air2 officer. “There’s a heat anomaly back in the front of the motel.”
Officers on the ground cornered the suspect before they gave themselves up.
In addition to the arrest of three suspects, police seized several vehicle master keys. Two adult suspects from Quebec and a teenage boy from Stratford, Ont. are facing several charges.
- Zoe Korn, 22, from Quebec – facing five charges including possession of an automobile master key and committing an indictable offence
- Ibrahima Traore, 18, from Quebec – facing two charges including possession of an automobile master key and committing an indictable offence
- A male youth, 17, from Stratford – facing two charges including possession of an automobile master key and committing an indictable offence
