Man wanted on Canada-wide warrant arrested in Vaughan homicide

York Regional Police have arrested a man that was wanted Canada-wide for his involvement in a deadly shooting in Vaughan.

Around 4 a.m. on March 9, authorities responded to a shooting in the Dufferin Street and Summeridge Drive area. Officers found a male victim with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a trauma centre but was later pronounced dead.

Two additional shooting victims were later found by police in Toronto — a 20-year-old man with serious injuries and a 21-year-old woman with minor injuries. Both victims were treated at a hospital and released.

The homicide victim was identified as 24-year-old Alexander Mills-Smith of Toronto.

Through the investigation, on April 19, police located 20-year-old suspect Illia Ayo of no fixed address in a stolen vehicle in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area in Toronto. Police determined that a second occupant in the car assisted Ayo in evading investigators.

Ayo had been known to have associations in London, Ont. and Calgary, Alta., police said.

Ayo faces several charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession for trafficking and other weapons-related charges.

The second man arrested was identified as 20-year-old Abdinasir Aden of Toronto.

He’s been charged with accessory after the fact to murder, possession of a firearm,  ammunition contrary to prohibition order, failure to comply with probation order (concerning previous weapons offences), possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession for trafficking and additional weapons-related charges.
