81-year-old woman struck and killed by dump truck in North York

    UP NEXT:

As the investigation continues into a fatal fire in Brampton, neighbours now voicing their concern over what they say is the possible cause. Melissa Nakhavoly reports.

One woman is dead and two others are in life-threatening condition following a two-alarm fire in Brampton.

Firefighters were called to a home on Jade Crescent in the area of Torbram Road and Williams Parkway just before 11 p.m. Friday night.

Brampton Fire Chief Bill Boyes says when they arrived they were met with heavy smoke and flames and one person was found outside suffering from injuries sustained in the fire.

“We were made aware that there was two people trapped inside. Our crews made valiant efforts to go in and rescue two individuals from this fire, brought them out to be transported by paramedics to hospital,” he said.

Boyes said a woman was later pronounced dead in hospital. Two others – a male and a child – remain in critical but stable condition in hospital.

“It’s just a very tragic day here in Brampton,” said Boyes. “Any of these types of incidents where someone loses a life or is severely injured really is tough on our crews. It’s tough on the community and it’s devastating to the friends and family of the individuals.”

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.

“The Office of the Fire Marshal was called in to investigate a fire incident in the Jade Crescent and Jayfield Road area of Brampton. We offer our deepest condolences to the family following the news of one person’s passing. We are not in a position to comment on any further victims, status or otherwise,” said a statement from the Office of the Fire Marshal.

“An OFM fire investigation to identify the origin, cause, and circumstance of the fire is underway with the scene examination now complete. As our investigation has just begun, preliminary findings of cause would be speculative and it remains too early to provide further information,” the statement continued.

Boyes says they are still trying to determine if the home was equipped with working smoke alarms.

“I think it’s a very important reminder, please make sure you have working smoke alarms, a working carbon monoxide alarm and you understand what to do when a fire happens,” said Boyes. “We see too often in the province of Ontario and the City of Brampton the consequences of not having working smoke alarms.”

“We will be going door-to-door to every house on this street today to check with residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms. It’s absolutely critical and life-saving that you have them in your home.”
