The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after shots were fired on Highway 403 in Mississauga.

The police watchdog says around 8 p.m. Saturday night Peel police were called to the area of Highway 401 and Highway 403 after a vehicle had struck a guardrail.

As officers approached the vehicle the driver emerged holding a hammer and one officer ultimately fired his weapon at the man.

The SIU says the man was not struck as a result of the gunfire but he was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.
