Police release photos, descriptions of 3 men wanted in Leslieville shooting

Toronto police have released descriptions of three men wanted in connection with a daytime shooting in Leslieville on Friday which claimed the life of an innocent bystander.

Police say there was a physical altercation between three men in the area of Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue just before 12:30 p.m. when two of them pulled out handguns and began shooting at each other.

Forty-four-year-old Karolina Huebner-Makurat was walking in the area at the time and was struck by a stray bullet. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby trauma centre where she was later pronounced dead.

On Sunday, police released surveillance images and further descriptions of the suspects.

The first man is a male, 25-30 years old, tall with a medium build and cornrows. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt with a black stripe from sleeve to sleeve, blue jeans and white shoes. Police say he may have sustained injuries to his head.

The second man is described as male, 18-25 years old, of average height with a slim build and long hair in a ponytail. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, a black North Face hoodie, dark-coloured jeans and white shoes.

The third man is described as male, 18-25 years old, tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie, dark pants and dark shoes.

“The suspects should be considered armed and dangerous,” police said in a release. “If located, do not approach, call 911 immediately.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been started by friends of the Huebner-Makurat family.

The campaign’s organizers say they are “heartbroken” by the senseless passing of Karolina – identified as Caroline – who they say was walking along Queen Street to pick up lunch when the shooting occurred.

“She was a shining light in the lives of her two beautiful daughters, aged 7 and 4,” reads the post. “The sudden loss of their beloved mother has left these innocent young souls grappling with unimaginable grief and uncertainty about their future.”

Funds raised by the campaign will be used to support the family during this time of “profound need.”

“The funds raised will be dedicated to securing their emotional and psychological well-being, educational purposes and a cause near and dear to Caroline’s family.”

As of 9 p.m. Sunday, more than $120,000 of the $200,000 campaign goal has been raised in less than a day.
