The Toronto Blue Jays traded reliever Trent Thornton to the Seattle Mariners for infielder Mason McCoy, the team announced on Wednesday.
Thornton was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last week when the club acquired reliever Génesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Blue Jays have assigned McCoy to the triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Thornton, 29, had been with Toronto since 2018, when he was acquired from the Houston Astros for Aledmys Diaz. He pitched as a starter for Toronto in his first season in the majors, leading the club with 154 1/3 innings pitched and 149 strikeouts.
Thornton then appeared primarily as a reliever for the Blue Jays, failing to generate much consistency in the role. He appeared in four games with Toronto this season and pitched mainly with the Bisons.
McCoy, 28, has yet to appear in the majors. Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round in 2017, he’s primarily played shortstop with the Tacoma Rainiers in triple-A but has also appeared at second base, third base and left field.
McCoy has hit 234/.330/.407 with 11 home runs, 55 RBIs and 20 stolen bases across 87 games with the Rainiers.
