Owen Sound restaurant owner dies after violent attack; 3 suspects sought

An Owen Sound business owner has died from his injuries after he was allegedly brutally beaten by three suspects outside his restaurant last week.

Owen Sound Police put out a release on Thursday detailing the alleged incident that took place around 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 17 near 10th Street East and 2nd Avenue East.

It is alleged that three male suspects went to The Curry House and ended up getting into a dispute with the restaurant’s owner. Police say the three men assaulted the victim on the sidewalk outside the restaurant.

The victim was taken to London Health Sciences hospital with critical injuries. Family and friends say 44-year-old Sharif Rahman had been on life support since last week’s attack.

He died in hospital on Friday morning, according to Owen Sound city officials.

The city’s mayor says Rahman was an “exceptional member of the community” and a successful businessman and a devoted family man.

“His passing is a tragic loss for our community and it is a time to come together with compassion and support,” said mayor Ian Boddy in a statement. “Let us all reflect on Sharif’s kindness and his love of the community by treating everyone with the same generosity he embodied.”

Flags at city buildings have been lowered in Rahman’s memory.

The suspects ran from the area before officers arrived. Investigators say the first two suspects ran southbound on 2nd Avenue before continuing eastbound on 9th Street East.

The first suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s to mid-30s, 5’10”- 6’2” tall with a medium build and short dark hair. He was last wearing a blue t-shirt, black shorts and black running shoes.

Police say they are aware of a third suspect who is described as a white male in his late 40s to mid-50s with curly hair. He was last seen wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

Suspect vehicles have been identified as a gray or blue 2000s model Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute.
