OPP officer seriously injured while investigating ‘suspicious vehicle’ in Caledon

An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer suffered serious injuries while investigating reports of a “suspicious vehicle” on a residential street in Caledon on Monday morning.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said just before 7:30 a.m. police arrived at the scene on Tundra Road, near Hurontario Street and Highway 410, after receiving a call about a suspicious Jeep Wrangler with “multiple occupants” inside the vehicle.

The driver allegedly took off and struck an OPP officer. The officer was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

“Police set up a spike belt. The driver attempted to flee the scene. In the process, there was one officer who was struck by the vehicle. That officer is in hospital with serious injuries. At about the same time, there was another officer who discharged his pistol we think about three times,” SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said at the scene.

The SIU said the Jeep and another civilian vehicle were hit by bullets.

Police located the Jeep near Mayfield and Dixie roads in Brampton but the occupants have not been found.

“We’re not sure at this time if anyone was struck. It doesn’t appear to be so but it is still early in the investigation,” Dennette said.

“It appears one bullet went through a civilian vehicle on the street and at least one other bullet struck that Jeep Wrangler that fled the scene.”
