Overnight snowfall hits Toronto and GTA leading to messy morning commute

Commuters and motorists dealt with messy weather conditions as an overnight snowfall blanketed Toronto and parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Environment Canada warned that heavy snowfall with accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres was expected to fall on Thursday night and into Friday morning.

A winter weather travel advisory was lifted for Toronto and much of the GTA on Friday morning. Still, the alert remains in effect for some parts of the province, including Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.

The snow tapered to light flurries Friday afternoon as a band of lake effect snow off Lake Ontario shifts to the south.

Motorists travelling through Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton Hills, Milton, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, St. Catharines and the Northern Niagara Region experienced hazardous winter driving conditions on Thursday night, which persisted through the early morning hours.

Snow squall watches were in place for other regions on Friday, including Goderich, Sarnia, London and Strathroy.

The City of Toronto opened four warming centres as temperatures dipped below zero on Thursday night.

The temperature on Friday remains steady at around -2 C, with the wind chill making it feel like -9 C. The weekend is expected to be bitterly cold, with daytime temperatures around -9 C and -10 C, feeling more like -17 on Saturday and -11 on Sunday with the wind chill.
