About Denio

Denio Lourenco is a digital journalist with CityNews Toronto, where he writes about crime, politics and social issues. Over the span of nearly a decade, Denio has covered major breaking news events, like Canada and U.S. elections, natural disasters and mass shootings. He has also written extensively about how laws, policies and institutions affect LGBTQ2S+ people for small-town papers and international news outlets, such as Reuters, NBC News and the Globe and Mail. Before joining the CityNews team, Denio worked as a writer and digital content editor for CTV News and HuffPost Canada. He has also held various positions in television, podcasting and digital news. He previously worked as a social media producer on the podcasts “Chosen Family” and “Making Gay History,” and was an associate producer on the CBC documentary series, “The Big Sex Talk” in 2022. His investigative work includes a feature story about the mistreatment of transgender people in the Canadian prison system which was a finalist at the 2021 Digital Publishing Awards and later adapted into a documentary for OutTV called “Surviving The Block.” His exposé into a prominent Canadian think tank and its impact on anti-transgender legislation was also a finalist for investigative journalism at the 2025 Canadian Online Publishing Awards. Denio is a proud first-generation high school and university graduate. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and gender studies from the University of Toronto and a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He speaks English and Portuguese.
