A man has been rushed to hospital after a robbery attempt led to him being shot in Mississauga on Thursday morning.
Peel regional police were called to Derry Road and Cardiff Boulevard for reports of a shooting just after 11 a.m.
The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery.
Const. Tyler Bell said they believe the incident began as a robbery. The victim and a woman were in a black Cadillac Escalade when a confrontation occurred with three males, Bell said.
They believe the woman got out of the vehicle when she was approached by the three suspects at which time the victim got out and tried to intervene.
That confrontation then moved into an adjacent parking lot where a physical altercation happened, and the victim was shot.
Bell said they are still investigating whether the suspects and victim were known to each other.
“That’s going to be part of the ongoing investigation to ascertain what relationship, if any, but this appears to be targeted,” he said. “When you have people arrive on scene, approach individuals specifically, there’s an altercation with them, and then they leave … we’re satisfied that this is not a random incident, and we believe it to be a robbery attempt.”
A baseball bat was also found on the scene that Bell said they believe is the suspect’s weapon.
Police say the three male suspects involved fled in a vehicle in a black Jeep Wrangler.
The investigation is still ongoing.
