Death of arrested man being probed: SIU

The SIU has launched an investigation after a Toronto man collapsed while being arrested near Christie and Bloor streets on Monday, and died later in hospital.

Police were in the area for an investigation when they came into contact with 45-year-old Charles McGillivary around 8:30 p.m.

“Mr. McGillivary was arrested by the officers.  During the arrest a physical interaction took place and Mr. McGillivary collapsed,” the SIU said in a release Wednesday.

“Mr. McGillivary was taken to Toronto Western Hospital by ambulance where he later died.”

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the investigation.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
