West Toronto Apartment Gutted By Blaze

Someone’s home is gone, but as hard as it may be for them to imagine how, it could’ve been so much worse.

No one will be living in an Eglinton and Oakwood-area apartment for quite some time after a terrible fire completely engulfed the residence around 5pm Friday.

Flames were all that was visible when crews arrived on the scene, but fortunately, no one was inside at the time.

“It looks like it started with suspected careless smoking and a mattress,” said Toronto Fire District Chief John Hill.

One man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for treatment. Five people needed to be evacuated from the premises.

“I hear people outside shouting to get out of the building,” said witness H. Coraic.

“When I looked out I saw the fire coming through the window.”

No other injuries have been reported, though officials say there’s significant water damage to the entire building estimated at $100,000.
