World’s most expensive photo sells for $4.3M

Going, going, gone: the world’s most expensive photo has sold at a New York City auction.

“Rhein II,” a shot of the Rhine river by Andreas Gursky, was bought for $4.3 million at Christie’s on Nov. 8.

Gursky’s monstrous photograph — it’s three metres wide and two metres tall — depicts the sky, water, grass, and path as a series of horizontal lines.  It’s one of six prints of the image, four of which belong to museums. Two belong to private collectors.

It’s not a new record for the German artist. He set the highest price ever paid for a photo back in 2006. “99Cent II Diptychon,” a detailed look at the inside of supermarket, sold for $3.35 million.

That record stood until May, when a buyer paid $3.89 million for ‘Untitled #96’ by Cindy Sherman.
