Toronto police arrested 1,116 people for impaired driving offences in 2018 and York regional police arrested 1,650.

Seventy-four of Toronto’s arrests were drug-related and 1,042 of them were alcohol-related. Between November 14 and December 31, 170 of the arrests were the result of the police’s holiday RIDE program.

“I can’t wrap my mind around how anyone could ever make the decision to drive after drinking,” York regional police Const. Laura Nicolle said.

Nicolle said people who get behind the wheel while impaired should remember the Neville-Lake family. Three Neville-Lake children and their grandfather were killed by drunk driver Marco Muzzo in 2015.

“It’s absolutely baffling that we’re still seeing any of these (incidents).”

Nicolle said they are seeing an increase in people calling in suspected impaired drivers.

2019 is the first full year of mandatory driver alcohol screenings and legal cannabis.
