UN court to rule on India-Pakistan alleged spy case

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The United Nations’ highest court is preparing to issue its judgment in a dispute between nuclear neighbours India and Pakistan over the pending execution of an alleged spy.
The International Court of Justice case being decided Wednesday centres on the fate of Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was convicted of espionage and sabotage by a Pakistani military tribunal and sentenced to death in 2017. Jadhav was arrested by Pakistan in 2016 after allegedly entering the country from Iran.
India denies that Jadhav is a spy and has asked the world court to order his release, arguing he was denied access to consular assistance, in breach of an international treaty, and not allowed to choose his own defence lawyer.
The U.N. court ordered Pakistan not to execute Jadhav pending the outcome of the case.
