There’s a few ways to finish this sentence: As Canadian as.Anne of Green Gables? Snowshoes? Toques? Being stuck between British and American law and idioms?
If you ask Oscar-nominated director Jason Reitman, that list should includes his movie ” Juno.” But it doesn’t count at the Genies, awards given to Canadian films.
Now, “Juno” has a Canadian director. It has Canadian stars and cast, and the film was shot in Canada with a Canadian crew. But it didn’t receive a lick of Canadian funding, and therefore, it’s not eligible for a Canadian award.
A spokeswoman for the Genies says “Juno” didn’t qualify for an award because no one submitted the film for consideration.
Montreal-born Reitman admitted Friday night that the film was not entered, but that’s because the studio considered it a lost cause.
He’ll have to take solace in the host of international acclamations. Diablo Cody won a best original screenplay Oscar for her work, and the film won best picture at the Independent Spirit Awards.
