Ontario’s COVID-19 cases above 500 for 9th straight day

Ontario is reporting 548 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, a drop from the 615 cases confirmed on Monday.
However, it is the ninth straight day that cases in the province have surpassed 500.
In a tweet, Minister of Health Christine Elliott said over 42,000 tests were conducted in the previous day. The testing backlog currently stands at 55,483.
Elliott added that the most new cases are in Toronto (201), Peel (90), Ottawa (62) and York Region (56), with the majority of new cases (61 per cent) in people under the age of 40.
Seven more people have died, bringing the provincial death total to 2,987.
Forty-one patients are currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with COVID-19. Twenty-six of them are on ventilators.
The latest numbers come as the province shifted its COVID-19 testing protocol to appointment only.
Ford has said the new system was put in place to prepare the province’s 155 assessment centres for winter.
