It was 40 years ago today, that the world lost a musical legend and humanitarian. John Lennon was just 40 years old when he was shot and killed by a fan outside his New York apartment.

The Beatles singer/songwriter was not only known for being a member of ‘The Fab Four’ but also for his anti-war activism. He penned the iconic ‘Imagine’ about world peace.

To mark the sad anniversary, Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney shared a touching photo, saying “A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world.”

Another personal photo was shared by Ringo Starr, who tweeted, “Tuesday, 8 December 1980 we all had to say goodbye to John peace and love John. I’m asking Every music radio station in the world sometime today play Strawberry Fields.”

Family of the late guitarist also shared their memories online. Lennon’s son Sean took to Instagram with a family photo.

While eldest son Julian posted a simple, classic closeup pic of his dad taken by Tom Hanley in 1971.

Lennon’s wife, controversial artists and peace activist Yoko Ono, posted a jarring photo of blood-stained glasses – the ones Lennon was wearing when he was shot. Ono shares the picture every year with a message against gun violence.

Mark David Chapman, who was 25 at the time, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. Chapman will make a twelfth attempt at parole in August 2021.
