The 20-year-old suspect hasn’t been identified, but officials have said he would appear in a Milwaukee court later Friday.
The FBI deemed the threat a fake Thursday. The message was posted on the Web site “The Friend Society” on Oct. 12 and warned that trucks would deliver dirty bombs Sunday to stadiums in Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Cleveland, Oakland, Calif., and the New York City area. It also said Osama bin Laden would claim responsibility.
An FBI official has said the Wisconsin man acknowledged posting the fake message as part of a “writing duel” with a man from Texas to see who could post the scariest threat. The other man allegedly involved corroborated the story, according to officials.
The man arrested Friday doesn’t appear to have any ties to terrorist groups, authorities say.
Meanwhile, the FBI and the department of Homeland Security tried to restore fans’ confidence and issued a statement saying they “should be reassured of their security as they continue to attend sporting events this weekend.”
