Casino Royale has become the most successful James Bond film of all time at the box office – shooting past the previous record-holder Die Another Day.
Casino Royale marked Craig’s first time out as 007 and he won critical acclaim for playing a tougher, grittier Bond. Based on Ian Fleming’s first book in the series, the story takes place at the start of Bond’s days as a superspy.
It opened last month and has since made more than $454 million around the world. That tops Die Another Day, which made $431 million in 2002.
The film’s success this year was punctuated by a strong Christmas holiday weekend. It made $14.5 million at 6,300 theatres over the weekend through Sunday.
It’s only the fourth movie this year to surpass the $300 million mark overseas – after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, The Da Vinci Code and Ice Age: The Meltdown.
Craig has already been slated to star in the next Bond film.
