Health Canada Issues Warning About Balloon Kits Sold At The EX

If you went to the CNE you’ll want to double check your purchases after federal officials issued a warning about a product sold at this year’s fair that poses a serious health risk to your kids.

The item that raised alarm bells is a balloon blowing kit that was sold at three booths inside the International Pavilion in the Philippines area. These products have been banned in Canada since 1973.

On Friday Health Canada issued a warning about the items sold at the EX, advising anyone who bought one to dispose of it immediately. Balloon blowing kits contain a combination of solvents which kids could possibly inhale that could cause early symptoms of central nervous system dysfunction, including dizziness and hallucinations and could lead to unconsciousness and coma.

No injuries or illness have been reported in connection to the kits sold at the CNE.

To use the product, kids dip a short straw into the solvent and blow through the straw.

Health Canada officials seized 1,600 kits from the booths at the EX on Aug. 20, but an unknown number of devices were sold before that.
