Saturday was a special night for Maple Leafs fans down at the ACC, where Doug Gilmour’s number 93 was raised to the rafters in a pre-game ceremony.
After the crowd chanted “Dougie! Dougie!” and the popular player said his thank yous, he took his place in history, with his family at his side.
“This is all about thank yous today, guys, [to] my coaches – Mr. Burns especially – the training staff, my players: the friendship, the passion they played [with]. They’re all going with me up here tonight,” he acknowledged.
Gilmour’s number won’t officially be retired by the team, but to many, it will always be associated with the guy with the hardworking, blue-collar attitude.
During his six years with the Leafs, he scored 452 points in 393 games, finished as a finalist for the Hart Trophy and was named team captain.
“Killer,” as he became known, had been traded to the Leafs in 1992 and soon became a fan favourite, taking the club to within a game of the 1993 Stanley Cup final.
