Ford, Chrysler Can’t Accept Terms Of CAW Deal With GM

Ford and Chrysler are talking about a deal with autoworkers – but not their own plans.

Both companies have criticized the recent agreement between General Motors and the Canadian Autoworkers Union, saying the concessions offered don’t go far enough.

Ford is asking for even lower labour costs to keep the company competitive and allow it to qualify for government aid.

Workers at GM Canada have already agreed to a wage freeze and to eliminate bonuses and some vacation time, among other measures.

Ford has said they cannot accept the same deal and it has an ally.

Chrysler says those endeavours are not enough and the company may abandon Ontario if the union can’t agree to deeper cuts.

The Premier, for one, isn’t buying Chrysler’s threat.

Dalton McGuinty indicated that he would not be interfering in the ongoing negotiations among the provincial government, the federal government, and Chrysler. He said the discussions were taking place behind closed doors, away from the media.
