Boy Thinks He Set World Record For Blowing Up Balloons – With His Nose

O.K, so this won’t be the most important story you’ll ready today. Or this year. Or, for that matter, this century. But somehow there’s a comfort in knowing about what 13-year-old Andrew Dahl did last Friday.

The Blaine, Washington boy is hoping to officially get into the Guinness Book of World Records after blowing up balloons using only his nose. Dahl put the inflatables to one nostril at a time and proceeded to expel air into 213 of them, blowing them up to the required 20 centimetres, the minimum allowed for the record.

He did it in the requisite time of 60 minutes at the local library, while his mother kept careful track. “Does this count as practicing my trumpet?” he asked his mom at one point during the Herculean effort.  His mother’s answer: “Only if you can play that with your nose.”

This was a real family affair, with his dad carefully measuring every balloon to ensure it was the right size.

Amazingly, this was the lad’s second try at setting this rather dubious achievement. Last February, he taped himself nosing 184 balloons to perfection but lost out because he made the mistake of giving the finished products to his father to tie off. This time he did it himself and seems certain he set a new mark. He’s still waiting to hear from the Guinness folks.

There’s no way of knowing if anyone will ever best Dahl’s efforts but if they do, they may have to pay more to get their balloons. After all, it’s one industry where you always have to worry about inflation.
