Mom Charged With First Degree Murder In Death Of 18-Month Old Son Was About To Have Children Taken From Her

A family tragedy that started with the involvement of the Children’s Aid Society and a household in turmoil has ended with the death of an 18-month-old boy – and his mother being charged with first-degree murder.

Police aren’t saying much about what happened in the underground parking garage of the Mississauga Executive Centre at 1 Robert Speck Parkway Friday morning. The location is just steps away from the Square One Shopping Centre.

Cops were called to the scene around 7:50am Friday, reportedly by the suspect herself, who allegedly told them to look in a silver Honda CRV (being towed, top left) parked in the garage.

Cops arrested 34-year-old Nadine Bernard who worked in the building.

The Bolton resident has two other children, but authorities have located them and determined that they’re safe.

CityNews has learned the family had been investigated by the Children’s Aid Society in the past and that authorities were close to removing all three of her kids from their mother’s custody.

Cops are refusing to release details about the manner of the infant’s death, calling it evidence. An autopsy will be conducted over the next few days but police are not expected to announce the results.

But police now suggest there’s more to this case than just the killing of a child. “It’s early on but we have some reason to believe it’s a murder-attempt suicide situation,” explains Peel Police P.C. Adam Minnion.

Bernard appeared in court during the afternoon and has been remanded into custody.

It’s Peel’s sixth murder of 2009.
