Mayoral candidates divided over car issues

The mayoral candidates’ ideas on cars contradict each other as the race for David Miller’s seat heats up.

Rocco Rossi has clearly emerged as the most “car-friendly candidate” of the five main contenders – focussing this week on the tunnel extension of the Spadina Expressway and endorsing the idea of a fixed link to the island airport.

Rob Ford seems more car-friendly than George Smitherman, Joe Pantalone or Sarah Thomson with his strong opposition to streetcars – which he said get in the way of those who are driving.

Both Ford and Rossi are more opposed to letting bikes share the main roads than the other candidates  – choosing instead to make bike lanes available in ways that don’t crowd the car crowd.

Thomson prefers bike city with while tolling the main roads, while Smitherman wants to reduce the days of disruption when it comes to road repairs.
