NEW YORK, N.Y. – One person is dead after a brief but severe storm swept through New York City on Thursday afternoon, uprooting trees and damaging cars.
In the Park Slope neighbourhood of Brooklyn, witnesses reported the skies going pitch black around 5:30 p.m., while trees started waving like grass. Large branches snapped away from the trunks, hitting cars and smashing windshields.
Some homes suffered damage, and traffic came to a standstill across the city.
The lone victim died after a tree toppled onto a vehicle on the Grand Central Parkway.
A tornado warning was issued for Staten Island and Brooklyn, but weather officials are still trying to determine if a tornado did take place.
Downed trees and power lines remained throughout the metropolitan area, while 25,000 customers remained without power, and rail and airline passengers faced delays late into Thursday evening.
