Man charged with killing Toronto police officer with stolen plow gets lawyer

TORONTO, Ont. – The man accused of running down a Toronto police officer with a stolen snowplow now has a lawyer.

In a brief video appearance, Thursday, Bob Richardson said he would represent Richard Kachkar, who faces a first-degree murder charge.

The prosecutor asked Ontario court justice of the peace Milan Then to put the case over until February 24 to allow time for disclosure.

The 44-year-old Kachkar was shot and arrested on January 12, about an hour after Sgt. Ryan Russell was struck while trying to stop the plow.

He has been in custody at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, Ont., since his release from hospital but appeared from the Toronto’s Metro West Detention Centre.

His left arm remained in a black sling.

Russell left behind a wife and two-year-old son.
