TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police say a second man is facing charges in connection with an investigation into the mass shooting at a community barbeque on Danzig Street that left two dead and 23 others injured.
It is alleged that 18-year-old Shaquan Mesquito threatened to harm people on Danzig Street on the day of the community gathering.
Constable Wendy Drummond told 680News they have no information that the accused was at the barbeque at the time of the shooting.
“The charges laid against Mesquito were in regards to threatening death, there have been no charges, at this time, laid in connection with the shooting,” she explained.
Mesquito has been charged with two counts of uttering threats to cause seriously bodily harm and nine weapon’s related charges.
It is alleged that the accused was in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest but it appears that it was not one of the guns used in the shooting.
“At this point in the investigation we don’t have information to suggest that that firearm was used during the shooting at Danzig.”
The Toronto Star reports that Mosquito lived in a home where a second shooting took place on the day of the Danzig shooting. The home, which is on Whiteleas Avenue, is 10 kilometers away from the location of the shooting. Police are investigating if the two shootings are connected.
Const. Drummond say Mesquito was arrested eleven days after the shooting while on a TTC bus.
He appeared in court on Wednesday.
19-year-old Nahom Tsegazab, who was previously charged in connection to the shooting, also appeared in court on Wednesday. Has been charged with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm.
Const. Drummond said the investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to come forward.
