Chicago has 500th murder this year as homicide rate rises

Although Chicago has a comparable population to Toronto, the number of murders in the third largest American city is significantly higher.

The 500th murder in Chicago this year took place on the city’s West Side, bringing the 2012 homicide rate up 17 per cent from the previous.

While Toronto generally has somewhere between 50-80 homicides each year, Chicago has had more than 400 murders each year since before 1990.

Resident Jarrell Jackson says he’s worried about the younger generation.

“I’m not scared for myself, but I’m scared for my kids, teenagers and young kids,” Jackson said.

The statistics in Chicago have improved lately, down from the early 1990’s where having 800 and 900 murders a year was not uncommon.
