Police investigating 4 more carjackings within 2 hours in Scarborough

Toronto police are investigating another string of carjackings that took place in the city’s east-end on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

Police tell CityNews there were four carjackings in Scarborough between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.

One of the incidents happened outside an apartment building on Dundalk Drive, in the area of Kennedy and Ellesmere roads.

Police say a man in a Honda Civic was pulling into a parking garage at the building when two suspects in another vehicle pulled up alongside. The two suspects allegedly pulled out a gun and demanded the man get out of his car.

Officers were also called to the area of Morningside and Sheppard avenues shortly after midnight after getting reports of another carjacking. Police say one armed suspect was involved and no injuries were reported.

Similar incidents were reported to police in the area of McLevin Avenue and Tapscott Road and Pharmacy Avenue and McNicoll Avenue. Two other incidents were reported in Pickering within the same time frame at Sheppard Avenue and Whites Road and Kingston Road and Brock Road.

Police say the two vehicles taken are described as:

• 2012 grey Toyota Corolla with the Ontario license plate BSNR 776
• 2020 white Honda Civic with the Ontario license plate CPNJ 623

The suspect vehicles are described as a black four-door Honda sedan and a dark blue/black four-door older model Toyota sedan.

One of the suspects is described as male, Black, between 18 and 25 years of age, six foot tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing black clothing, a black mask and armed with a black or grey handgun.

“All suspects should be considered armed and dangerous,” police said in a statement.

Toronto police create support team to address rise in carjackings

There have been nearly 100 carjackings in Toronto so far this year which has led Toronto police to setup a new investigative unit to focus on the surge in violent vehicle thefts.

There were 103 carjackings in the city in all of 2021.

Mayor John Tory issued an open letter last week to the federal and provincial governments, calling for additional resources for Toronto Police. In the letter, Tory said all levels of government need to work together to improve public safety in the city.

“Things like stiffening the penalties when it comes to the provincial government,” said Tory speaking to Breakfast Television on Thursday morning. “We need the federal government to help us with some of the cross-border international parts of this, in terms of where these cars end up.”

On May 16, Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner was carjacked at gunpoint by a group of suspects in the parking lot of a Cineplex in Etobicoke.

A few days later, three suspects were believed to be involved in a series of armed carjackings allegedly carried out in less than two hours.
