One man is in hospital fighting for his life following a two-vehicle crash in Brampton early Wednesday morning.

Peel Regional Police responded to the collision in the area of Heart Lake Road and Sandalwood Parkway just after midnight.

Officers say a 19-year-old man from Brampton had been driving northbound on Heart Lake Road north of Sandalwood Parkway with a 20-year-old passenger when his vehicle entered the oncoming southbound lanes.

That driver was then struck by another vehicle, driven by a 27-year-old man from Mississauga, travelling southbound on Heart Lake Road in the same area.

Police later confirmed the 20-year-old male passenger was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remains.

Police believe the winter road conditions likely played a factor in the crash.

Heart Lake Road was closed north of Countryside Drive for several hours.
