Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of the GTA, calling for possible freezing rain Wednesday night that could transition into light snow by Thursday morning.
The statement is in effect for:
- Newmarket – Georgina – Northern York Region
- Pickering – Oshawa – Southern Durham Region
- Uxbridge – Beaverton – Northern Durham Region
“Rain may transition to a period of freezing rain this evening, especially over areas of higher terrain,” the national weather agency said, adding that ice accretion up to a few millimetres is possible.
“Any freezing rain is expected to transition to periods of light snow by early Thursday morning. Periods of light snow will linger through Thursday, though any accumulations are expected to be minor.”
A freezing rain warning could be issued as the weather system approaches these areas.
Currently, a freezing rain warning is in effect for Orangeville, Shelburne and Dufferin Country.
“There could be some icy sections particularly to the north and northwest over the higher elevations, some freezing rain,” CityNews 680 meteorologist Jill Taylor said.

For Toronto and other areas of the GTA, it will mainly be a mostly rainy day.
“It’s showers, drizzle, rain at times heavy for the afternoon into the evening. We’ve got soggy conditions, keep children and pets away from riverbanks,” Taylor said.
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority issued a Water Safety Message that will remain in effect until Thursday.
