A former teacher in Scarborough is facing charges after he allegedly sexually assaulted two girls while he coached them over many years.
Toronto police said that between January 2012 and June 2020, a man was employed as a teacher at Bond Academy Private School in Scarborough.
The man taught and coached two teenage girls, and it’s alleged that he repeatedly sexually assaulted them. Police said the man was hired at the school in 2006.
An investigation began in March 2023, leading to the arrest of 50-year-old Royal Carney of Toronto. He faces two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference. Carney is expected to appear in court on May 2.
Police believe there may be more victims.
Parent concerned following sexual assault allegations
A parent whose child attends Bond Academy tells CityNews that Carney had been absent for over a month and that school officials failed to inform other parents and guardians why.
In a letter from Bond Academy principal John Healey, he shared “upsetting news” regarding the sexual assault charges that Carney is facing.
“Bond Academy has learned that one of our staff members, Royal Carney, was recently charged under the Criminal Code with sexual assault and sexual interference, stemming from allegations made by two former students at Bond Academy. Royal Carney has been placed on indefinite leave,” Healey wrote in the letter.
“Please understand that Bond Academy takes this matter extremely seriously. We have very limited information about this matter and will be monitoring it closely as it moves forward. We intend to cooperate with any formal investigative process into this matter and will provide more information to the school community as it becomes available.”
The 50-year-old frequently shared videos on the social media app, TikTok, showing him coaching young students. In one video, Carney says, “Thank you to all the families who allow me to help guide their children.”
That same concerned mother shared an email sent to a group of parents from Carney, who defined himself as a “Certified Professional Life Coach.” He explained that he would “provide an action plan for children and teens from 10 to 20… who are looking to refocus their lives.”
Carney’s program was not affiliated with Bond Academy.
