10-year-old killed in multi-vehicle crash on QEW near Beamsville

A 10-year-old boy is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on the QEW near Beamsville.

Provincial police say the three-vehicle collision occurred in the Niagara bound lanes at Tufford Road around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police say a vehicle being driver by a 31-year-old Mississauga woman collided into the rear of an SUV that was carrying two 10-year-old brothers in the back seat. The SUV was pushed forward into another SUV.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the chain reaction crash occurred when the initial vehicle “approached slowing, or stopped, traffic.”

One of the young boys was extricated from the SUV and taken to hospital with serious injuries where he was pronounced dead. The boy’s 44-year-old mother and his brother were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The 37-year-old female driver from the other SUV was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined and no charges have been laid.

“There was some congestion ahead due to afternoon rush hour traffic,” Schmidt says. “This is certainly a very tragic investigation.”

The crash investigation initially closed all Niagara bound lanes in the area. The road has since reopened.
