U of T group to stage student event at downtown sex club

Reading, writing, and writhing in a bondage dungeon may not have been what mom and dad had in mind when it came to higher education. But the latter is a distinct possibility when the University of Toronto’s Sexual Education Centre launches its Sexual Awareness Week with a steamy, clothing-optional sojourn at a downtown Toronto sex club on Monday.

The event will take place at the Oasis Aqua Lounge at 231 Mutual Street – a water-themed adult playground complete with a pool, hot-tub, sauna, a 70s shaggin’ wagon, and a BDSM dungeon.

Despite unaffiliated online declarations that “U of T is holding an orgy, and you’re invited!” one of the event’s organizers, Dylan Tower, maintains public, group sex isn’t a given. At last year’s event, he noted, only about two couples actually fornicated in front of others.

“It’s just a very open and positive space where people, if they please, can get naked and have sex if they want. There’s no push in that direction, it’s just a possibility,” he told CityNews.

“It’s basically just a social event at the club which allows people to experiment with different sexualities as well as have a little bit of public nudity in their lives.”

Sex is permitted throughout the club, except the hot-tub – for hygienic reasons of course.

Tower expects at least 100 people to attend to the event, which is one of nine slated for Sexual Awareness Week.

Others include an introduction to sex toys, BDSM for beginners, and introduction to anal play for men.

“We run Sexual Awareness Week every year…it’s to let students know that if they are looking for information they can come and seek it out from us, as well as that there is a community in the area that they can come and talk to.”

The University of Toronto said the Sexual Education Centre is a student organization, funded by the student’s union, that is permitted to run under its own guidelines as long as no laws or policies are being broken.

“The University will not…interfere with any group on the basis of its philosophy, beliefs, interests or opinions…unless and until they lead to activities which are illegal or infringe the rights and freedoms and individuals,” a U of T statement stressed.

The Oasis Aqua Lounge’s owner, Jana Matthews, says the club gives legal-aged students a playground to explore their kinks in a friendly, safe environment.

“All the students have sex. If it’s in the dorms or somewhere hiding in a parking lot because they don’t have a safe place…we provide a safe, fun, beautiful place with music and spa facilities.”

“It’s not for everybody but we all have our preferences,” she said.

Matthews says safe sex is encouraged and condoms are provided on site, but those who plan on using the BDSM dungeon are encouraged to bring their own whips.
