Woman charged after claiming friend was kidnapped

A Markham woman who told police her friend was kidnapped is now facing charges of extortion and public mischief, after the man was found safe in a Toronto home.

York police say the woman walked into a police station in Markham on Thursday and reported that her friend had been kidnapped. She also allegedly told police that a ransom demand was made by the abductors.

York police and Toronto police’s Emergency Task Force later found the man safe at a home in the York Mills and Victoria Park Avenue area of Toronto.

Three adults were arrested at the residence. The friend who made the report was arrested a short time later.

Janelle Philip, 25, and Shafiah Ibrahim, 28, are both facing charges of extortion and public mischief.

Police are seeking a third suspect, Camar Anthony Grant, 26, of no fixed address.
