Many of Toronto’s outdoor ice rinks will open on Saturday afternoon, marking the unofficial start to winter in the city.
“The opening of our City-run ice rinks is the true kick-off for the winter season in Toronto,” Mayor John Tory said in a statement.
“I urge residents across Toronto to lace up their skates this weekend and join in the fun.”
The rink at Nathan Phillips Square, the covered rink and skating trail at Greenwood Park and the figure-eight skating trail at Colonel Samuel Smith Park are among those opening on Saturday. The remaining rinks will open on Dec. 3.

The artificial ice rinks are compressor-cooled and can stay open in warmer weather. Unseasonably warm temperatures or heavy snow, however, can force them to close.
The City’s natural ice rinks — built and maintained by volunteers — need sub-zero temperatures and usually open in January and February.
